There are few, better ways to improve your fitness than a bicycle.
Bicycling is still one of the best ways to burn fat, improve muscle tone and improve cardiovascular health – no matter your age. Cycling works your major muscle groups – particularly your legs – while also working your cardiovascular system. More importantly, cycling does this low impact on your joints, which reduces the risk of injury and joint soreness.
But, how efficient are we? Here is something interesting: Did you know a gallon of gasoline (if you could drink it) would provide nearly 31,000 calories? Hey that means the average person could get 900 miles to the gallon riding a bicycle - that makes us pretty efficient at burning fuel.
You see, a person riding a bicycle at 15 miles per hour burns 0.049 calories per pound per minute. So a 175-pound person burns 515 calories in an hour, or about 34 calories per mile. A high-end pro cyclists, like those in "Le Tour de France" are burning about three times more calories or nearly 100 calories per mile! In an average 100 mile stage they will burn from 8,000 to 10,000 calories (bring on the food!)
All this is to say that bicycling is not only fun, but a great and practical way to burn calories, improving cardiovascular fitness and losing unwanted inches for the new year. Here are some great articles to help you learn more.
